Borehole cleaning with an airlift

Is your borehole giving cloudy water, sand or less and less water? We clean it with an airlift: compressed air lifts the sediment off the bottom until the water runs clear.

About the service

When a borehole needs cleaning

Over time sand, silt and clay from the aquifer build up in the borehole, and iron and manganese deposit on the casing screens. The bottom rises, the screen slots clog and less and less water reaches the pump.

A pump that draws in sand wears out quickly, and cloudy water clogs filters, water heaters and washing machines. Cleaning restores the borehole's yield and protects the pump and the appliances in the house.

  • Sand or cloudy water from the taps
  • Falling flow and pressure
  • The pump trips on dry-running protection

What it includes

What the cleaning involves

  • Airlift

A compressor sends compressed air to the bottom. The air and water mix rises and carries the sand, silt and sediment out.

  • Pump check

We pull the pump and check it for sand wear. If needed we repair or replace it.

  • Flow test

After cleaning we measure the level and flow so you know how much water the borehole gives.

  • Correct pump depth

We refit the pump at a depth where it does not draw sediment from the bottom.

  • Sand separator

In sandy ground we fit a hydrocyclone ahead of the plumbing to protect the taps and appliances.

  • Water analysis

On request we take a sample. The analysis shows whether you need a filter, a softener or UV.

How we work

The process step by step

How long it takes depends on the depth and the amount of sediment. We keep going until the borehole runs clear.

  1. 01RequestYou describe the problem: cloudy water, sand or a drop in flow. We ask about the depth and age of the borehole.
  2. 02Site visitWe check access and measure the water level and the depth to the sediment.
  3. 03Pulling the pumpWe take out the pump, pipe and cable and inspect them.
  4. 04AirliftWe clean with a compressor until clear, sand-free water comes out.
  5. 05MeasuringWe measure the flow and level and tell you which pump suits the borehole.
  6. 06RefittingWe refit or replace the pump, start the system and check the pressure.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How often should a borehole be cleaned?

There is no fixed interval. It depends on the aquifer, how the borehole was built and how deep the pump sits. Clean it as soon as the water turns cloudy, sand appears or the flow drops.

What is an airlift?

A method where a compressor sends compressed air to the bottom of the borehole. The air lightens the water column, so the water rises fast and carries out the sand, silt and sediment.

Can a dried-up borehole be brought back?

Often the borehole has not dried up; its screens are clogged, and cleaning brings the water back. If the aquifer level has dropped for good, the answer is a new borehole, which we can drill.

Why is the pump bringing up sand?

The usual causes are sediment at the bottom, a pump set too low or a damaged casing screen. Cleaning and the right pump depth solve most cases, and in sandy ground we add a hydrocyclone.

Do you clean new boreholes?

Yes. Every borehole we drill is cleaned with an airlift before the pump goes in. We clean old boreholes too.

How much does borehole cleaning cost?

It depends on the depth, the amount of sediment and whether the pump has to come out. Call us and after a few questions or a site visit we will give you a price.
